The Alters Tells The Story of Jan Dolski And His Seven Alternate Versions

The trailer opens with the protagonist introducing himself and how things have taken a turn for the worse. Jan Dolski’s variants are said to be sentient beings, as the game takes inspiration from real-life DID cases

Then comes a slideshow of each character doing something to keep themselves busy and useful by either watering the plants or exploring the planet and building the base. Some of them can also be seen arguing and interestingly, each of the variants seems to be wearing an outfit marked 01 to 07, except for one.

The planet is turning towards a massive Sun causing a rapid spike in radiation levels. In a race against time, Jan must harness Rapidium crystals found on the planet to create his alternate versions, in other words, Jan’s “alters”.

The official artwork as shown above parodies Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper hinting at the game’s humor in a manner unique to each alter. There also seem to be seven other alternate versions of Jan, who look like exact clones of each other, while also having completely different backgrounds at the same time.

Jan must depend on building relationships with his variations, for their collective survival. The game is set in a mobile base that is forever moving and will require teamwork from Jan and all of his alters. The quest for survival will require every variant’s wide range of expertise who will each acquire distinct skill sets as the game progresses.

All of this makes every variant indispensable to maintain the base and for other tasks like cooking and crafting tools for surface exploration while also gathering essential resources.

The Alters Takes Inspiration From Real-Life DID Cases and Movie Depictions

During the announcement last year, Director Tomasz Kisilewicz revealed that the alternates in the game will each have “a different being that is annoyed by different things and driven by different motivations”. Kisilewicz also revealed that going against one of the alternates or mismanaging an alter will result in constant conflicts.

Kisilewicz also mentioned how the inspiration for the alternate selves was taken from real-life DID cases, to “best portray both the similarities and differences between them.” Kisilewicz revealed that each of the variants shares not just the same physical appearance and body, but also a “large part of their life paths and personality”.

It might sound like the game runs the risk of misunderstanding DID patients and perpetuating them in a poor light, however Kisilewicz mentioned that there was extensive research done both individually about the condition, while also drawing more inspiration through movies set around the same subject. Kisilewicz also confirmed that the game only draws inspiration from DID cases as a point of reference.

The Altersare also said to be sentient beings having their unique problems, goals, emotions, and even existential doubts about their purpose. Despite their differences, their collective goal to escape echoes Jan’s resoluteness to survive.
