Andre Braugher, star ofHomicide: Life on the Street,Men of a Certain Age, andBrooklyn Nine-Nine, has died. Braugher passed away on Monday at the age of 61 after a brief illness. The news was confirmed by Braugher’s publicist, Jennifer Allen. He leaves behind his wife, actress Ami Brabson, and their three sons, Michael, Isaiah, and John Wesley.
Braugher will be remembered for his Emmy-winning role as Detective Frank Pembleton in NBC’sHomicide: Life on the Streetand as Captain Raymond Holt inBrooklyn Nine-Nine. Braugher debuted in films alongside Denzel Washington in the 1989 film,Glory.

Born and raised in Chicago, Braugher’s parents were Sally Braugher, a postal worker, and Floyd Braugher, a heavy equipment operator. Braugher earned a scholarship to attend Stanford University and graduated with a BA in theatre. He also attended Juilliard’s Drama Division and earned an M.F.A.
He met his wife, Ami Barbson, on the set ofHomicide: Life on the Street. His wife played a crucial part in encouraging him to take on the comedic role inBrooklyn Nine-Nine, as he was initially doubtful about the role. His wife assured him that he was funny and not being deceived. Barbson has also appeared in several roles in shows includingLaw & Order,Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, andThe Jury.

Having debuted as a sidekick detective in the television film series,Kojak, Braugher was subsequently cast as a ferocious detective in his breakout performance inHomicide: Life on the Street. The show ran from 1992 to 1998, and in 1998, Braugher won his first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor for the series.
Over the years, he was cast in several significant roles across movies and TV series. In 2006, he took on the role of a thief, Nick Atwater, in the FX mini-seriesThief. The critically acclaimed show won him his second Emmy. Later, he also starred as a middle-aged anxiety-stricken dad inMen of a Certain Age. Braugher was nominated for two Emmy Awards in 2010 and 2011 for his performance on the series.
In his most recent stand-out performance, Braugher played the gay NYPD captain of the Nine-Nine precinct, Raymond Holt, inBrooklyn Nine-Nine.
