Cillian Murphy is most certainly one of the top actors in all of Hollywood right now, for a wide variety of reasons. After all, Murphy has acted in quite a few distinct roles that set him apart. However, he wasn’t the major name that he is today, just a few years ago. Murphy was just the third choice in a very iconic apocalypse film that wanted Ryan Gosling over the Irishman.

Cillian Murphy Wasn’t The First Choice For An Epic Apocalypse Movie That Almost Went To Ryan Gosling

Cillian Murphygot his big break in Danny Boyle’s28 Days Later, a post-apocalyptic classic that remains an iconic flick for many reasons. Murphy was only 26 when he was in the movie and truly shone as Jim – as a virus broke out in London and everyone was in peril.

In case you didn’t know, Cillian Murphy was the third choice for the part. Ewan McGregor, with whom Boyle had previously collaborated onTrainspotting, was initially selected to play the bicycle courier Jim. However, when McGregor dropped out, Ryan Gosling was considered as the next choice. Ultimately, due to scheduling conflicts, Ryan Gosling also declined the role, leading to Cillian Murphy ultimately taking on the character.

It is to be noted that a sequel was released back in 2007, titled28 Weeks Later, but did not feature Cillian Murphy. While speaking withCollider, Cillian Murphy made it clear he wants to be a part of28 Years Later, should it happen.

“I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, “Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.” So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex [Garland] thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it.”
