Disney and Lucasfilm have officially announced that the upcoming film,Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, will be promoted as the last entry in the adventure film series. While it was anticipated that the film would be Harrison Ford’s final performance as Indiana Jones, recent press materials suggest that it will also mark the end of the franchise altogether.
Director James Mangold expressed excitement for the upcoming film and referred to it as a brand new and final adventure for Indiana Jones. Additionally, Disney’s recent press release describesDial of Destiny (June 2023)as the highly anticipated final installment of the beloved franchise.
Will there be a recast of Indiana Jones?
The decision to end theIndiana Jonesfranchise withHarrison Ford’sfinal performance has been bittersweet for fans. Some have expressed disappointment at the news, while others believe that it is the right time to end the series.
Lucasfilm’s president Kathleen Kennedy had previously stated that the studio would never recast the role of Indiana Jones, which seemed to indicate that the franchise would end with Ford’s portrayal of the iconic character. During the premiere of his Apple TV+ comedy series “Shrinking,” Harrison Ford was asked about the possibility of returning to his iconic role as Indiana Jones by Variety. Ford expressed his ongoing interest in the character and stated that he would be open to exploring how Indy’s story could continue.
“I always wanted to do it, I wanted to do the rest of the story to see the end of his career,” Ford said before noting that he wasn’t planning on coming back after this. “It’s the last time for me.”
Interestingly, this news also coincides with reports that Lucasfilm had canceled a plannedIndiana Jones Spinoffseries. It is unclear whether the decision to end the franchise influenced the decision to cancel the spinoff or whether other factors were at play. Nevertheless, it seems that fans will have to say goodbye to Indiana Jones after this final adventure, and it remains to be seen whether the franchise will be revived in the future with a new lead or if it will be left to rest in peace.

When asked about his decision to finally dip his toe into the world of superheroes, Ford explained his interest in exploring different genres and collaborating with talented filmmakers.
“I thought, ‘Everybody else seems to be having a great time.’ I watch all these terrific actors having a good time,”Ford said of Marvel movies in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.“I like doing something different to what I’ve ever done and pleasing people with it. So I’ll try a piece of that.”
