Samuel L. Jackson Thought He Would Play A Stormtrooper

During an interview onLate Night with Seth Meyers,Samuel L. Jacksontalked about one of the most memorable roles in his career, Mace Windu inStar Wars, more specifically how he was able to bag this role. The actor revealed that he had once spoken in an interview that he would like to work with George Lucas, best known for hisStar Warsfilms. Soon after he announced this, Jackson was given an opportunity to meet with the director to discuss a potential future for him in this franchise.

“I got a call saying, ‘George would like to meet you.’ So I went to his house, and he hadn’t really completed the script. He said, ‘I don’t know what you do in it,’ and I’m like, ‘Look, make me a Stormtrooper. I just wanna run across screen, nobody even needs to know. Just let me go.’”

Upon meeting Lucas, the actor was told that the director wasn’t sure where he would fit in his film. Jackson who was simply interested in being part of the experience suggested that he would not mind playing a side character, he simply wanted to be part of the film. Surprisingly enough, Jackson revealed that a few months after this happened, he was invited to be part of the project. Interestingly, however, he was unaware of the significance of his role in this project.

Samuel L. Jackson revealed onLate Night with Seth Meyersthat when he came on the set ofStar Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, he was still under the impression that he would be playing a small, insignificant role. Upon reaching his dressing room, he assumes that he is in someone else’s room to try on his costume. It was only when he asked someone about what he was going to wear that he realized that he would be playing a Jedi named Mace Windu.

“So I go in this room and there’s a pair of boots and this girl comes in with these Jedi robes, and there was someone else’s name on the door so I figured, they were just bringing that guy’s costume. Then she came in and said ‘Okay put the boots on, let’s try the robe on’ Then I said, ‘Oh wait, I’m a Jedi?’ She’s like yeah.’”He went on,“ and then somebody else came in with the Halliburton with eight lightsaber handles and they go, ‘Take. Pick one.’ And I about die.”

The actor will be wearing the Jedi robes and having a conversation with Yoda. It was around this point that the actor started to get excited about this. However, it wasn’t until what happened next that the excitement felt by him hit the roof. Jackson was asked to pick his own light saber something that made him extremely happy.
