James Gunn’sGuardians of the Galaxyseries is one of the most fun and heartwarming trilogies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, the trilogy is easily a fan favorite, being witty with its humor, as well as having deep and meaningful plotlines for all the characters.

Though the characters were not as popular before their appearance on the big screen, being one of the lesser-known groups in Marvel Comics, Gunn’s movies made them one of the most iconic heroes who fight in space. What is quite interesting to find out, however, is that James Gunn changed quite a major aspect in his adaptation of the comics as it was too similar to another massive franchise.

James Gunn Did Not WantGuardians of the GalaxyTo Be LikeStar Wars
During an interview withGizmodo,James Gunnrevealed that he did not want Peter Quill’s origin story and his relationship with his father, Ego, inThe Guardians Of The Galaxy 2to play out like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader inThe Empire Strikes Back. The director revealed that one of the main ways he avoided that was by not hiding the fact that Ego was Peter’s father and making it known as soon as we met the character.
“And I think one of the things I impressed upon people early on is the identity of Quill’s father is not the big stunner in this movie. I’m not leading it all to Darth Vader being Luke’s father in the third-act reveal. This is really about the relationship between [Star-Lord] and his father, who happens to be a living planet, and his other father, Yondu, who is an abusive jerk. It’s about the dysfunctional family triad that those three characters have. That’s the center of the movie.”

He mentioned that, that itself would have required a dramatic reveal that would have been too similar to Darth Vader being Luke’s father and the reveal of this fact in the third act of the movie. He added that he wanted the movie to instead be about Peter’s struggling relationship with his new father as well as his adoptive father who raised him, Yondu. He simply wanted to explore the dysfunctional dynamic between these three people rather than focusing on the fact that Quill’s father was evil.

James Gunn Changed Major Aspect Of Peter Quill’s Origin To AvoidStar WarsComparison
James Gunn went on to reveal that he took some extreme steps to avoid this comparison withThe Empire Strikes Back, including changing aspects of Peter Quill’s backstory from the comics. The director revealed that he did not like J’Son being Quill’s father even though he was originally in the comics. This was because J’Son was a king and, for Gunn, that also felt far too familiar to Darth Vader.
“I didn’t like that in the comics J’Son is a king, and he also reeked very much of Star Wars, so I didn’t want that same sort of thing,”Gunn said.“I like the idea of Quill’s father being an ancient, cosmic, incredibly powerful being who, just like Rocket, has problems connecting to other people because […] there’s nothing else like him. This character has a hard time connecting to other people because he’s a god who’s been alone for billions of years.”

He instead liked the idea of Ego, an ancient, cosmic figure who has trouble making connections with other people and there was no one else who was like him. He was a god who was terribly alone and had no one to understand him. Gunn liked him for Quill’s father much more as he was far more interesting.
