Cate Blanchett has played many different types of characters throughout the course of her career. From playing villains to heroes and even morally grey characters there is nothing that the actress can’t do. She has proved this exact fact, time and time again through many projects likeTár, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Aviator, andBlue Jasmine.

Through her work, she has gained an immense amount of respect in the industry as well as winning a lot of accolades, including being nominated for and winning an academy award, a number of times throughout her career.
One of her most notable and memorable roles has to be inCarol,a film that explores the relationship of the titular character with Theresa, as they start to fall for each other in the 1950s, a dangerous time to be attracted to someone of the same sex. Interestingly enough a film with a strong message such as this ended up causing a lot of odd drama in Blanchett’s personal life due to one interview.

Cate Blanchett’s Words Were Misinterpreted
During a press showing ofCarolat the Cannes Film Festival,Cate Blanchettgave an interview. Here the actress explained that like her character, she herself had had many relationships with women in the past. The nature of these relationships was purely platonic and the word relationship had inverted, commas on it, as the actress explained later. Many did not take it this way, though, as these words were deeply misinterpreted by the press.
Many people used this as an excuse to ask extremely personal questions about the actress’s dating life. Unfortunately, this news overshadowed the film itself, and it seemed as though this was all that people cared about. This of course, deeply infuriated Blanchett, who expressed exactly this during an interview withThe Guardian, where she talked about how ridiculous this entire thing was.

Cate Blanchett Got Very Angry Because Of The Controversy
When Cate Blanchett spoke toThe Guardian, she expressed how irritated and angry this made her. She started off by saying that in the past, she has played a journalist, but never was she asked about her qualifications in the field. She then added that if she had played someone who was unfaithful on screen, people would be a lot more cautious, and think multiple times before asking her if she had done the same in her personal life. The reason for this is the fact that it is a delicate matter in her personal life and not up for the public to know.
“Look,”she says, rolling her eyes at the memory,“I also just played Mary Mapes, who’s a journalist. No one asked me how long I’d been to journalism school. If I played someone who has an affair, I think a reporter would probably think twice before asking, ‘Ooh, how many affairs have you had?’ It would be a slightly delicate area. But there are no holds barred about asking me whether I’ve had relationships with women. And so I facetiously said, ‘Oh yes, I’ve had many relationships with women’ – because frankly, who hasn’t? Of course I said it in inverted commas. But the inverted commas didn’t make the page.”

She then questioned why this much caution is not used when asking her about her past relationships with women or, for that matter, her sexuality in general. When she was asked this question at the Cannes Film Festival, she answered in a joking manner that yes, she has relationships with other women, platonically, not finding it necessary to tell a news reporter about her personal life. This, unfortunately, was deeply misinterpreted, and published in a way to create buzz and get more media attention.
