However, Hartnett confessed that apprehension ultimately overpowered him, leading him to pass on the opportunity.
“I was so focused on not being pigeonholed and so scared of being considered only one thing as an actor.”

The realization of his error dawned upon him when Nolan castChristian Bale, who would go on to become the eventual Batman, in the sequel to Batman Begins, titledThe Prestige.
Josh Hartnett had a change of heart regarding the role of Batman, choosing to distance himself from it. His sentiment shifted further when he wasn’t considered forThe Prestige. Instead,Christopher Nolanselected both his eventual Batman, Christian Bale, and his then-girlfriend, Scarlett Johansson.
