The originalDawson’s Creekconclusion was bitterly disliked by Katie Holmes, who forced the show’s creator Kevin Williamson to change it. Dawson and Joey were supposed to be together in the original finale, but Holmes thought that this was not accurate for the characters or their journey. She had been in a relationship with Pacey intermittently throughout the series and wanted Joey to marry him. The Pacey-and-Joey ship was also backed by the show’s executive producer, Paul Stupin.
Although Williamson originally resisted changing the conclusion, he eventually consented. Joey and Pacey were married in the rewritten finale, while Dawson remained unmarried. Fans’ reactions to this conclusion were divided; some praised it for being more realistic while others criticized it for being a betrayal of the original program. Apart from this situation, the show was an absolute blast and an all-time fan favorite.

During an interview withTVLine,Tom Kapinos, the screenwriter and executive producer of the show shared his view on the situation and how Katie Holmes’ reacted to the fact thatDawson and Joey were scripted to end up together. He also shared in the interview that Holmes strongly resented this particular ending and pressured Williamson to change it. He said,“Katie freaked out. ‘I don’t want to end up with Dawson'”
