Avengers: Infinity Warwas one of the most anticipated movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only was the movie significant in ending the stories of the original Avengers, but it also signified the end of one of its most popular and high-grossing phases. The reason for its immense success was the way it balanced the plethora of characters and its immaculately well-executed storyline.

The reason behind its well-crafted storyline was a card game that Kevin Feige played with other Marvel bosses to decide who survives Thanos’ snap and who doesn’t.

After much deliberation and brain-storming, it was a given that Thanos would make the main antagonist in bothAvengers: Infinity WarandEndgame. However, now the bosses at Marvel had a different kind of problem they had to decide which Avenger would be disappearing with Thanos’ Snap and who would be staying. To put an end to their problem,Kevin Feigecame up with a clever card game.

Feige presented all the Marvel bosses with unique cards, slightly bigger than baseball ones, with each having the name and picture of all Marvel characters in the movies and the back of the card having information on each actor’s salary and contractual status. However, instead of actual figures, the card only had dollar signs drawn on the back.
The cards were then used to play only one game,Who Lived and Who Dies, and when the group had done playing the game, they mostly ended up sticking to the decision. Furthermore, Feige decided to make the characters disappear whose disappearance would have been the most heartbreaking.

Kevin Feige Wanted To Kill the Avengers Whose Death Would Be The Most Tragic
Deciding which characters would disappear or die wasn’t just a matter of a game of cards, it was also a matter of feelings and emotions. Kevin Feige, after his famous game of cards, decided to bid farewell to characters whose death would be the most harrowing and tragic for the audience.
So, King T’Challa aka Black Panther was to disappear since he was the new crowd favorite. Steve Rogers’s best friend aka Bucky Barnes or the Winter Soldier was to disappear for it would have been the most heartbreaking thing for Rogers, to lose his best friend all over again. Similarly, Peter Parker had to disappear because of his special almost father-son relationship with Tony Stark.

As for the original Avengers, they were spared to give their characters an appropriate end. Furthermore, other characters like Nebula or Rocket were retained for their personalities.
