Avengers: Endgamedevastated an entire fandom’s heart. The wave of mourning and heartbreak all over the globe was palpable in the air on the day of the film’s launch. For reasons that extend beyond the limits set byEndgame‘s overarching narrative and epic world-ending battle, the plot was made heart-wrenching in its tragic potential by the sensible sacrifice of its characters. The consequent deaths in the film’s third act were all necessary and yet there is nothing that the audience wants more than preventing those sacrifices from being made.

And now, it has finally become a moment of awareness and appreciation for the fandom who realize that they are just as much connected to the story as to the stars, especially Jeremy Renner when he confides (much to the mass’s approval) about the moment that has afflicted him the most among all the devastating moments littered throughout the movie.

Even as time puts a considerable distance between the Marvel literati and the carnage that wasAvengers: Endgame, most of us vividly recount the moments that forever incurred a shift in the tumultuous history of the cinematic universe. And yet, time does not heal all wounds – especially when the wound is made manifold and painful by the horror and futility of the act. The war that broke out across the universe after Thanos’s mad rampage to restore balance to all life stopped at Earth, but not before claiming the lives of Vision, Natasha Romanoff, and Tony Stark.

One of those deaths was directly intertwined with the fate of Hawkeye aka Clint Barton. During aBuzzfeedinterview withHawkeyeco-star Hailee Steinfeld, Jeremy Renner recalls the moment when Natasha falls to her death in Vormir, and in her final goodbye to Barton, she simply says,“It’s okay.”Renner claims,“That scene hurts me, by the way. It’s really affected my personal life. It breaks my heart, that scene.”The fandom couldn’t agree more.

The Greatest Sacrifices of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

From the very beginning, the MCU was marred by struggle, sacrifice, tragedy, loss, and calamity. But none of the moments shift the narratives more than a timely sacrifice underpinning all of the avenging that follows. The first Marvel sacrifice was witnessed when Agent Phil Coulson was murdered by Loki, thus pushing the wary group to come together and become the Earth’s mightiest heroes: the Avengers.

The years that followed saw the volatile journey from villainy to the redemption of Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier as he slept through decades and moved from one war to another, woken merely to execute assassinations, never to find a moment’s respite or control over his own mind.

The dysfunctional heroes that James Gunn introduced to the MCU became a crowd favorite and it was the sacrifice of Groot in the final moments ofGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1(2014) that helped save the galaxy from the clutches of Ronan (and delay the plans of Thanos a little longer). The fandom then grew to quickly fall in love with the Maximoff twins before witnessing the heroic and unlikely sacrifice of Pietro Maximoff inAvengers: Age of Ultronin 2015.

However, nothing could have prepared the audience for the horror of watching Thanos snapping Loki, just as the anti-heroic romance of the God of Mischief and the fandom came to a standstill. Beyond the incredulous gut punch delivered throughout the course of the rest of Infinity Saga, Phase Four traversed the residual grief while coming to terms with the tragedies of their past lives – Wanda’s torment, Loki’s race to save the timelines, and Hawkeye facing the repercussions of his role as Ronin during the Blip.

Vision’s sentient decision to return to his lifeless state and sacrifice not merely himself but the dream, too, to restore Westview deserves a worthy mention as does Peter Parker’s sacrifice of love and family in Phase Four threequel,Spider-Man: No Way Home.
