Opening Scene
In the opening scene of the video game, viewers find Joel and his daughter Sarah attempting to escape after the plague outbreak that took place in Austin. This is the same scene in the trailer version, with a little extra drama added to make it more creative and compelling. Another small yet significant detail shown is the broken watch worn by Joel, a gift from Sarah that viewers would often see throughout the show.
Journey To Boston
Another recreated scene in the trailer features Joel, Ellie, and Tess’s journey to Boston. In the game, Joel and Tess tried to get Ellie out of the city which led them outside of the quarantine area. As they traverse this, they are led to a crowded neighborhood filled with clickers and runners. In the trailer, all three of them attempt to remain quiet to not disturb the clickers.
Tess’s Voiceover
Speeches are a very important element in any adaptation, andThe Last of Usadapted a similar speech delivered by Tess (played by Anna Torv) from the video game. The content of her message is a bit expanded to make it more dramatic and to add more details, but the gist of it is still similar to the source material. Tess’s moving speech before she perished is one of the most significant Easter eggs viewers can spot in the trailer.

Winter Scene
The scene where Ellie is covered in blood while Joel holds her head is directly inspired by the same scene in the video game, although in a slightly different location. This pivotal scene is a testament to their relationship as Joel accepts Ellie as his surrogate daughter. The same scene can be found in theWintersection of the original video game.
Ellie’s Story
The Last of Uswill incorporate some scenes from the prequelLeft Behind. Riley, a character from Ellie’s past, was revealed in the trailer. The scene showed the two enjoying a carousel ride. It will be interesting to see how HBO will seamlessly incorporate Riley’s story into the television adaptation.
