Warner Bros. Cut Off Funding From Martin Scorsese’s Film
The Aviator,a film that Leonardo DiCaprio was part of and which deeply intriguedMartin Scorsese, tapped into a shared sense of obsession. Interestingly, it was distributed not only by Warner Bros. but also by Weinstein’s Miramax.
Scorsese toldGQ:
“I was against that; there was a meeting, and I was forced into that position. I’d already been, uh, made pregnant, as they said. And there’s no way you’re getting out of it. But the shoot went well, the editing went well until the last couple of weeks of editing. And they came in and did some things that I felt were extremely mean.”
Warner Bros. and Miramax withdrew their financial support for the project, Scorsese revealed. In the end, he personally financed the completion of the film with $500,000 from his own funds.
However, a few years later, Scorsese convinced himself to undertake the projectThe Departedin 2006, once more with DiCaprio. It was a story that deeply resonated with Scorsese, but he later regretted pursuing it when Warner Bros. reportedly questioned whether one of the two main characters, portrayed byLeonardo DiCaprioand Matt Damon, could survive in the film.
The concern was primarily about having a character who could potentially return for another film. Scorsese recalls a test screening where everyone, including the audience and the filmmakers, left with immense excitement and satisfaction.
Scorsese continued:
“And then the studio guys walked out and they were very sad, because they just didn’t want that movie. They wanted the franchise. Which means: I can’t work here anymore.”
The Departedmarked the film that earned Scorsese, a nine-time Academy Award nominee for Best Director, his first and only Oscar win.
