Taylor Swift’s Solidarity With LGBTQ+ WithYou Need to Calm Down
In 2019, Swift released her albumLoverwhere the homophobia-bashing songYou Need to Calm Downmade quite a bang. However, earlier, the singer was heavily criticized for not joining the political debate. Even during the 2016 US presidential election campaign, the singer’s stance was being questioned by the community. However, later, theAnit-Herosinger was found to be advocating for LGBTQ+ rights.
“I didn’t realize until recently that I could advocate for a community that I’m not a part of,”Swift told Vogue remarking how the“rights are being stripped from basically everyone who isn’t a straight white cisgender male.”
Swift’sYou Need to Calm Downhas posed as a landmark for her advocacy for the community. Indeed, the vibrant music video featured some queer celebrities. Also at the end of it, there was a direct plea for her fans to sign a petition in support of the Equality Act. The act was all in favor of protecting LGBTQ people from all sorts of discrimination in the social space. But for some, Swift’s sudden shift from utter silence to newfound advocacy for the community was a subject of criticism, accusing the singer of “queerbaiting” under the veil of performative allyship.
But Swift admitted to being devastated for not being vocal about gay rights earlier. It was when her friend and fellow singer Todrick Hall made the 33-year-old realize the essence of the matter.
“Maybe a year or two ago, Todrick and I are in the car, and he asked me, ‘What would you do if your son was gay?’”Swift recalled.
“If he was thinking that, I can’t imagine what my fans in the LGBTQ community might be thinking,”she continued.
Following the little conversation with Todrick Hall, Swift has been quite vocal about LGBTQ+ rights advocating the celebration of equal space in both political and cultural spaces.
