Do you know what’s unheard of? A Hollywood fanatic who hasn’t seenBruce Almighty.Jim Carrey’s hilarious on-screen presence combined with Morgan Freeman playing God was enough to make the movie a cult classic. It is still quite difficult for viewers to stifle a laugh while watching the movie.

Bruce Almighty guilty pleasure

Jim Carrey’s Bruce miserably taking on God’s throne madeBruce Almightyquite a fun, light-hearted watch. In the present day, almost every movie is coming out with one sequel after another, while back in the early 00s, sequels weren’t as big a deal as today. This might be why fans didn’t get to see more of Bruce. However, recently the screenwriters ofBruce Almightyrevealed that there were talks about giving the movie a part two. A rather twisted part two, may we add.

According toBruce Almightyscreenwriters, Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe, actorJim Carreyalmost starred in a possible sequel for the film. However this time, his character would be taking on the powers of the devil himself. Quite a contradiction from the first time, isn’t it? Apparently, both Carrey and his manager were all for the idea when it was pitched to them.

“We went in and pitched it, but it never quite worked out, because it was later on … It would have been another giant movie and I don’t think they wanted to do it. It just didn’t work out for some reason.”

While there is nothing that can be said with certainty as to why the sequel never saw the light of day, it could be because the theme might have been a little too dark for the time. Koren even stated that despite the seriousness of the topic, the sequel would’ve been written and made as a friendly comedy, much likeBruce Almightyitself.

“We certainly didn’t want to depress people. So I think that scared [the studio] a little bit, but to Jim’s credit, he totally understood that we were going to make a big comedy and thought everybody would connect with it.”

It sure would’ve been interesting to see the team’s take on the whole Lucifer angle. However, it might’ve been a bit too dark for the audience. Unlike today, where projects likeLuciferhave brought a new point of view to such themes, it’s uncertain how the viewers would’ve reacted to it back then.

To refresh your memory,Bruce Almighty ended with Bruce reconciling with Grace, the two getting engaged, and Bruce finding his happiness in reporting smaller, simpler stories. The imagined sequel would’ve started with Grace’s death.

Screenwriters suggested that Bruce, now possessing the powers of Lucifer himself, would use those powers to bring his other half back to life. Adding to this, Carrey presented an idea thatJennifer Anniston’s character would come back to life as a rotten corpse or a zombie and then be made “beautiful again.”The screenwriters were all for Carrey’s creative, yet strange, addition.

O’Keefe added that the sequel would’ve followed Bruce who had once again found himself at a loss of everything, his marriage included. This would lead to him giving up his beliefs and turning to the devil for help. Well, this would’ve been quite an interesting take on the story, to say the least.
