The Weinstein Company producedThe Hateful Eightalong with eight other films with Tarantino before parting ways in October 2017 amid the #MeToo movement allegations against Harvey Weinstein.
But earlier, besides TWS, the director was shopping his 2015 film,The Hateful Eight, to other distributors as well. That’s when Jeff Shell gave a controversial idea to the director of releasing the movie directly to iPhones.

Universal Head Suggested Quentin Tarantino to Release His Movie on iPhones
Universal suggested an unusual idea to Quentin Tarantino — releasing the movie on iPhones. A recent Wall Street Journal profile of Jeff Shell shared that thePulp Fictiondirector met with the Universal boss to discuss releasingThe Hateful Eight.
Quentin Tarantinowanted a big budget for shooting 70mm film and retrofitting theaters for that movie format. But, instead of considering his idea, Shell suggested releasing the movie on iPhones, which made Tarantino leave the meeting in frustration. TheThe Wall Street Journalwrites:

“Jeff Shell, at the time the head of the Universal studio, voiced his own pitch. ‘What if we released it on iPhones?’ he said. ‘Great,’ Mr. Tarantino replied, and stormed out of the meeting.”
If the then-universal head hadn’t made this pitch, Tarantino might have stayed with them. Eventually, he made his next film,Once Upon a Time… in Hollywoodstarring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt with Sony.

Quentin Tarantino was Disappointed with Jeff Shell’s Suggestion and Eventually Work with TWC
Shell’s response to Tarantino’s ambitious idea of a 70mm release (a format typically reserved for epic films) — was to release it on the smallest possible screen. No wonder Tarantino turned heel immediately and left in disappointment.
Anyway, Tarantino eventually worked with The Weinstein Company for the 2015 movie starringSamuel L. Jackson. The film studio spent roughly $60 million on production, and the 70mm roadshow added to the costs. Although TWC suffered a financial setback as the film only earned $155 million worldwide.

Now, after following the director’s split with The Weinstein Company, he made Sony Pictures his primary Hollywood studio forOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood.He also collaborated with Netflix to release an extended version ofThe Hateful Eightas an episodic limited series.
