Tengen Uzui became one of the most beloved characters inDemon Slayeranime following the events of the Entertainment District arc. Uzui single-handedly held his own against Upper Moon Six Gyutaro and Daki.

Despite being a popular character among the fanbase, Tengen Uzui’s dubbed voice actor, Ray Chase, was skeptical about the Sound Hashira’s importance to the story.

Ray Chase Believed Tengen Uzui Was a Lame Character
Tengen Uzui didn’t really impact the events inDemon Slayeruntil the second season of the anime. He made a brief appearance during season 1 of Koyoharu Gotouge’s brainchild when the 13 Hashira were introduced.
In an interview withAnime Herald, Ray Chase shared his initial thoughts on voicing Uzui in theDemon Slayeranime.

“I remember the auditions went out, I had no idea what it was. That one I was surprised was a hit because I just didn’t know anything about it personally. I auditioned for all the Hashira, got Tengen, had like 14 lines in season one, I was like ‘Oh, this is just some lame character who’s just appearing for a second.'”
Now, that’s a premature reaction to voicing one of the most beloved characters in the anime. Thankfully, Chase was told by Zenitsu’s voice actor, Aleks Le, to stay patient and it paid dividends.

“Aleks kept saying ‘you don’t understand, he’s like the main guy, just wait, just wait.’ And I had to wait two years to work on season two, but man, watching that in subtitles every week before to prepare was one of the coolest homework assignments ever. That animation was as flashy as possible. I’ve never seen an anime like that before.”
Despite his initial skepticism about Uzui’s importance inDemon Slayer, Chase ultimately loved being the English voice of the character.

Tengen Uzui Aided in Defeating The First Upper Moon in Over 100 Years
The Sound Hashira engaged in an epic battle with Gyutaro duringDemon Slayerseason two. While he held his own against Upper Moon Six for a bit, Uzui seemingly failed to overcome the demon’s poison.
However, it was later revealed that Uzui was only stalling to complete his Musical Score Technique, which helped him in reading Gyutaro’s moves pretty easily.
Uzui matched up pretty evenly with the Gyutaro for a few minutes, but he required Tanjiro’s help to ultimately defeat the first Upper Moon in over 100 years.
Although it was a great victory for the Demon Slayer Corps, it forced Uzui to retire. It wasn’t a surprise since the Sound Hashira lost his left arm and eye during the fight.
Being on the brink of death and disabled, Uzui became the second Hashira to retire from the Demon Slayer Corps.
